Reflecting on Calvin's 108-98 Victory Over Anderson

A few quick reflections on last Saturday's season-opening win over the Anderson Ravens.

Calvin's offense is, and will continue to be, very good.

I don't see any way around this.

And we mostly knew this would be the case going into the season. Jordan Brink is one of the best scorers we've seen in Maroon and Gold in (at least) the last dozen years or so. Tyler Dykstra and Jordan Daley have proven to be efficient scorers. And we saw Austin Parks shoot the three-ball with effectiveness last season.

What we didn't know is how Calvin would replace Tyler Kruis at the center position. Dan Stout, while not an offensive force, has been able to take advantage of the opportunities given to him in producing an above-average scoring efficicney for his career. He's also an adept rebounder -- particularly on the offensive end -- and has shown a remarkable ability to draw fouls and get to the line (where he shoots 70%). But depth was going to be a concern, especially with Stout on the shelf to start the year with a knee injury.

But Calvin found a weapon in 6-7 Freshman Connor VanderBrug. While probably more of a forward than a center, VanderBrug instantly showed the ability to score inside and outside, as well as rebound and handle the ball competently. He made some mistakes -- particularly on the defensive end -- and didn't end up as a terribly efficient scorer for the game, but 13 (points) and 13 (rebounds) as a starter in your first game on campus is terrific.

The lineup of Parks-Brink-Daley-Dykstra-VanderBrug is going to give teams fits with it's combination of size, speed, and shooting ability. Every one of those player can step out and drain a three, and every one of those players can get up the court on a fast break. Going 6-3, 6-7, 6-8 in the frontcourt is what we call "going small" at Calvin, but that's not a small lineup when compared to most every Division III team.

We saw a lot of these matchup problems on Saturday. Calvin's offensive efficiency rating (points per 100 possessions) was a robust 126. They found open three-point looks for the right people, they worked the ball up the court to score quickly in transition, they were effective at finding an open man cutting to the basket, and they really didn't have to force a shot all afternoon. Quality of opponent caveat applies: Anderson wasn't very good last year and probably won't be terrific this year, but offensively the Knights did exactly what they had to do.

Calvin's defense wasn't strong.

98 points is a lot to give up to a team like Anderson. Tip your cap because they made 51% of their threes, but very few of them were of the forced type. The Ravens routinely got open looks for their most deadly shooters and Calvin paid for that. Anderson finished the game with a 114 offensive efficiency rating, which isn't anywhere close to what Calvin wanted to allow.

Some of the younger players (in particular) got lost in the defensive scheme and were too slow to recognize when they needed to get back out and close out the shooter. Anderson shot 51% on 35 three-point attempts which is just not good at all. Some of that was luck, but clearly some portion was the inability to get a hand in the face of the shooter. The 51% is less concerning to me than the 35 attempts, because I think there's a lot of luck/noise in that percentage, but if you give up that many looks -- and most of them were quality looks -- you're not going to be successful very often.

The good news is that Calvin remained effective at protecting the basket. The Ravens shot under 38% on their two-point attempts, and many of the defensive mistakes (seemed to me) to stem from players concentrating too much on protecting the paint and not paying enough attention to their assignment on the wing. I think this type of error can be rectified relatively quickly. I think quite often we see the opposite in the early going of the season: players are too quick to abandon the middle and allow easy baskets inside. My eyes didn't catch that happening too often on Saturday.

Get that three point percentage down from 51% to 37%, and we'd have said the defense was just fine. If Calvin can tune-up that defense in the coming weeks (and I didn't see anything that looked like a long-term problem), it could be a very fun year.

Tipping Off The Season vs. Anderson

Calvin tips off their regular season tonight in Anderson, IN as they take on the Anderson Ravens. Two years ago Anderson won the inaugural meeting by a 73-60 margin, but they’ve since had a coaching change and were in full-on rebuilding mode when Calvin won 98-56 at Van Noord Arena last year. Former Wheaton (Ill.) assistant Owen Handy is in his second year at the helm of the Ravens.

Anderson has played two games already and has taken two relatively bad losses. They lost 70-64 on opening night to perennial UAA also-ran Case Western Reserve and then by a 80-68 score the next night in the same CWRU Tournament to Otterbein (who was voted to finish 8th of 10 teams in the OAC by the coaches). We don’t really with certainty how good any of these teams are so early in the season, but those are both games that good teams win. Anderson was voted to finish 9th in the HCAC by the coaches.

Projected Lineup

G – Jordan Daley
G – Jordan Brink
F – Tyler Dykstra
F – Mickey DeVries
C – Tyler Kruis

Kyle MacDonald started the exhibition game vs. Ferris State, but Jordan Daley was the one in the game during crunch time, and then he also started in the Alumni scrimmage. I’m guessing he’s the nominal starter at this point.

Projected Rotation Players

Dan Stout
Kyle MacDonald
Jordan Mast
BJ Van Loo
Austin Parks

TJ Huizenga had played as sort of the 11th man and may be still in the mix, but coach Vande Streek is probably looking to pare down the rotation to 10 guys. I think, for now, Parks is in and Huizenga is out, but that’s just me guessing. If you’re looking to go 12 deep, Brad Visser is probably the man there.

The final margin of this game might be wide enough that at least 11 or 12 players will get into the game anyway. We’ll see how coach Vande Streek treats this game if it gets out of hand though. More than anything this Calvin team needs time for the rotation players to gel together – mostly the second five – so perhaps he stays away from the deep bench unless it gets really ugly.

Prediction

Massey’s still-too-early rankings give Calvin an 84% chance of winning, and projects the final margin to be 11, but I’d guess something closer to 15. Calvin lost to Ferris in the exhibition game because they lost the battle on the offensive glass. They won’t lose that battle in this game. At the risk of hubris, anything less than a 10 point win would be concerning.

When we last met

True story: my wife, our (then) two-year old daughter and I went on a family “vacation” to Indianapolis* last year for really the sole purpose of attending the Calvin at Anderson game on the return trip. Also a true story: the game sucked.

*Priceline’s Name Your Price or Negotiator (or whatever it is exactly that William Shatner advertises) is really the way to go for every hotel stay. We ended up with a very nice room in the downtown Indy Hilton for under $50. This is not a paid advertisement.

The final margin was only 13 and, though the deficit was greater for much of the game, there was a perpetual feeling that Calvin was one run away from making the game interesting. But no such sustained run came, and the Knights trailed by double figures for the final 29:32 of the game (that's most of it). Watching it was sort of like banging your head against the wall, but not so fast that you're knocked out quickly. More like a slow, relentless thud. But I'm probably over exaggerating things somewhat.

I don't like myself when I get worked up about sports (because it's, like, sports), but there's nothing more frustrating than not being able to hang with these guys when it's like "you can/should be able to hang with these guys".

Also, their student section was fairly good (ahem).

Stats-and-More versus Anderson

This isn’t going to be a fun game to look at, but we'll press on anyway. We’ll start with a new one. Here’s a look at Calvin’s (approximate) win expectancy graph* for this game.

That looks about as bad as it felt. The chart gave Calvin a 0% chance of winning after Brock Morrison hit a three pointer to give Anderson a 30-16 lead after just about 11 minutes of game time. Of course, their real chances weren't really zero, but close to it. They made a little run early in the second half to get their chances up to 10%, but that's as close as they got in the final 30 minutes.

Exposed

Anderson 73, Calvin 60 (box score)

Calvin obviously lost this game in the first half, and the problems existed on both ends of the floor.

On offense, poor shot selection and poor luck on decent shots were paired together resulting in a complete lack of offensive flow. It struck me that a problem may exist due to too few players looking to take a shot. Snikkers and Powell and always willing to pull the trigger, but beyond those two, I didn't notice anyone with the first instinct to let the ball fly. And I'm not talking about forcing up shots here. I'm talking about receiving the ball with a bit of separation -- reasonable shots.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing -- if you don't think you have the shot, you probably shouldn't take it -- but when eight guys in a ten man rotation are always looking to pass first, you're going run into issues. Calvin doesn't have that Andy Draayer type player who's going to knock down a three if you give him an inch, but they do have some players who can hit from the outside. The Knights did attempt 16 three pointers (eight in each half) so perhaps I'm simply overreacting to a few instances that stood out to me, but a guy like Jordan Mast has got to trust himself enough to let one fly when he's open.
